chapter 8: because of the past
it's April 22nd and Abby is 3 months pregnant; she's starting to show her pregnancy, but her work has gotten harder, every 10 minutes she had to lye down or she'd throw up, which made treating patients and handling traumas even harder. Today she and Carter are going for a prenatal consult, to find out the sex of the baby; but John doesn't want to know, he'd like to be surprised in the day the baby is born; so he's waiting outside the Ob's office:
"So, Abby, every thing looks good, do you and John want to know the sex of the baby?"
Dr.Abbott asked holding the chart in her hands, sitting on a chair next to the gurney where Abby lay
"I do, but john rathers to wait..."
"so, let's see if it's blue or pink"
she put the gel on Abby's stomach and started moving the ultrasound around to see the sex of the baby
"here we go .... it's a..."
"don't"
"what?"
"I changed my mind I don't wanna know, it's better if me and John just.. wait until it's born to find out"
"ok, Abby, you know that this pregnancy may be riskier because of you abortion a few years ago?"
"yes, I know"
"you have to tell John about it"
"I don't see why"
she said sitting up while cleaning her belly
"In case we need to use heroic mesures..."
"Don't ... say that"
"but he needs to know"
"You'll tell him?"
"I'll try, I'll definitely try"
"ok"
and with that Dr. Abbott left, leaving a scrambled Abby behind.
Abby left a few minutes after Dr.Abbott:
"hey, how'd it go?"
Carter asked
"good, but... there's something I have to tell you"
"is everything ok?"
"yeah, but we need to talk"
"Ok, do you wanna go to Ike's?"
"yeah"
in Ike's:
"So, what did you wanna talk about?"
"Carter there's something I need to say, it's about the baby"
Carter face's changed and he looked worried and a bit pale like if he saw a ghost
"ok"
"when I was married to Brian, I got pregnant and I had an abortion 'cause the relationship was dead and there's a chance that this pregnancy will be riskier because of that"
"why? I mean, why'd you do it?"
"because I wasn't ready for a kid, but....(she took his and in hers) know I'm ready 'cause I know you'll be there by my side and that's something I didn't have before.."
a tears come down her cheek and he comes close and wipes it away and looks at her with a loving look
"I'll never leave you Abby. or, our child"
he gives her a sweet kiss showing her his affection and love.
